Tide Watcher & Water's Edge: two elegant, fully-furnished vacation rentals on the waterfront in Eastport, Maine, America's easternmost city.
We are by no means urban, however, and you can easily enjoy all aspects of the walkable historic district, from the tugboats and fishing vessels that work the waters of Passamaquoddy Bay, to the intricate brickwork of the Frontier National Bank (now the police station) and the Peavey Library. Twenty-nine of Water Street's buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, most of them dating from the rebuilding boom that took place after a fire destroyed the downtown in October of 1886.
Eastport has a thriving community of artists who exhibit in several galleries on Water Street in addition to receiving visitors in their studios. The Tides Institute and Museum of Art, newly-refurbished in Spring 2005, is building a collection of work by historic local artists on both sides of the border art of the Downeast and Maritime region as well as an art reference library.
The breathtaking views of nearby Campobello Island and Deer Island, New Brunswick, and their islet neighbors, will inspire even non-painters.
Seasonal car ferries (late-June to early-September) make it easy to visit these Canadian islands, indeed all of the Quoddy Loop.

You can go hiking on the trails of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park; do some leisurely beachcombing at Herring Cove on Campobello Island; attend a Wednesday-night concert in Lubec, Maine, given by the professional musicians who teach at the internationally-recognized SummerKeys music program; stroll through Downeast Heritage Museum in Calais to learn some of the culture and history of the area. |
Or, how about sea kayaking on the Bay or on one of several nearby lakes, or relaxing aboard the sailing schooner Sylvina W. Beal on a sunset or whale-watching cruise?
Nearby golf courses, art and antique shopping, and visiting with local residents all make for a memorable vacation experience.

Tide Watcher
Tide Watcher has two bedrooms, each with a duvet-covered queen bed, plus a twin bed in one of the bedrooms.
There is a full bath with tub and shower, plus an ensuite bathroom with stall shower in the master bedroom.
The kitchen is fully equipped for whatever you want to prepare, from lobster to blueberry muffins.
In addition to cable television and DVD and VHS players, the building is wired for Ethernet, making it easy to use your laptop with a high-speed DSL Internet connection.
There is premium white-oak flooring throughout the apartment, with vinyl coverings in the kitchen and bathrooms.
You have your own laundry room with stacked washer and drier, complete with iron and ironing board.
You will find a small collection of books, games, and jigsaw puzzles to wile away the occasional foggy or rainy day, including the mystery novels of Eastport's own Sarah Graves.
Linens and towels are provided, as well as a binder of information and brochures of area attractions.
A spacious deck overlooks the water, complete with gas grill and patio table and chairs for you to enjoy your coffee while watching the sun rise over Campobello (remember the movie?) and celebrating that you are in the place where the sun rises first in the U.S. each morning.
From the muffled morning sounds of fishing boats leaving the nearby working harbor, to watching seagulls, seals, eagles, and loons, having a glass of wine on the deck as you welcome the first moonrise in the nation, and snuggling down after seeing a night full of stars, you will be so happy here.

Water's Edge
Water's Edge is similar to Tidewatcher in all respects, except that it has one bathroom, with tub and shower. Each of its two bedrooms has a queen bed.
The WaCo Diner (pronounced 'wah-ko) is next door, and will deliver take-out meals at no additional charge. There are several other restaurants within easy walking distance on Water Street, and the IGA supermarket is a short drive away. Don't forget to visit the Pantry Store at Raye's Mustard Mill and Museum, the last operating stone-ground mustard mill in the U.S.
Eastport is "Different by Nature," and we hope you will want to come and see for yourself what makes this area so special. In this time of instant communication, instant food, and instant gratification, it is soothing to live by the rhythm of the great tides, the daily movement of the seagulls, the passage of minke whales, and the lingering summer evenings.
During the summer, our weekly rentals go from Saturday to Saturday. Check in after 3:00 p.m., check out by 10:00 a.m. No smoking and no pets, please. In the off-season, we have a three-night minimum stay available at a special rate.
