Living in the Hazard ZonesHow Downeast LNG and Quoddy Bay LNG (and latecomer Calais LNG) would violate the LNG industry's own standards by subjecting local populations in Maine, Sipayik, and New Brunswick to hazards from potential LNG releasesRead about the Hazard Zones The Society of International Gas Terminal and Tanker Operators (SIGTTO) is the de facto world authority on LNG safe practices. Their publication, "Site Selection and Design for LNG Ports and Jetties," warns against siting LNG terminals where LNG vapors from a release or spill could affect civilian populations. The proposed local LNG projects violate that standard along with dozens of others. |

Arthur Gelber, of Calais LNG Project Company (formerly, "BP Consulting," "St. Croix Consulting," "St. Croix Development," "Calais LNG," "Northeast Energy," and "Calais Maine LNG Import Terminal"), displaying his disingenuous "good neighbor" policy by expecting Canadians to accept economic, health, and safety risks from his poorly-sited project in Maine
"We're hopeful the Canadians will be good neighbors. … We hope that as neighbors in the spirit of cooperation, that we can find common ground between what we're doing and what they're doing. We have interests, they have interests. There are things that they want to do that involve us as there are things we want to do that involve them."

Legislation Watch > US > Federal > 110th Congress (2008) > Senate Bill S. 2822 Repeal of FERC authority over LNG terminal siting
- Sen. Olympia Snowe & Sen. Susan Collins still refuse to co-sponsor this bill. Both senators have written their constituents about how they voted against FERC-superior authority above states in LNG terminal siting. Sen. Collins even put into writing that LNG terminal siting isn't in her realm of responsibilities; that it's not a federal, but a local matter! FERC authority is a federal matter, not a local one. Let Sen. Collins and Sen. Snowe that you want them to co-sponsor this bill. Contact them now!

Legislation Watch > US > Federal > 110th Congress (2008) > Senate Bill S. 2822 Repeal of FERC authority over LNG terminal siting
- Sen. Olympia Snowe & Sen. Susan Collins still refuse to co-sponsor this bill. Both senators have written their constituents about how they voted against FERC-supreme authority above states in LNG terminal siting. Sen. Collins even put into writing that LNG terminal siting isn't in her realm of responsibilities; that it's not a federal matter!
Sen. Collins has it backwards LNG terminal siting is a federal matter, with authority resting with FERC; S. 2822 would return LNG siting authority to the states.
